Marginalia

Terms of Service

Last updated September 2026

These terms cover your use of Marginalia. By creating an account you agree to them. If you don’t, please don’t use the service.

The books you add

You may add books you own or otherwise have the right to read. You are responsible for the content you add and confirm you have the rights to it. The book files themselves stay on your own device — Marginalia never uploads or stores them — so they remain under your control.

Links to buy books

When a book is on your shelf without a file, Marginalia offers a link to find a copy at Bookshop.org, which pays independent bookshops rather than a warehouse. Some of those are affiliate links and we earn a small commission if you buy through one. It costs you nothing extra, it never changes which books we show you or what the assistant says about them, and the link is labelled wherever it appears.

Paying for Pro

The reader is free, and free is the whole reader. What a paid plan buys is a better model to ask and more questions a month — see the plans for what each one costs and gives.

A monthly or yearly plan renews on its own until you cancel it, at the price shown when you bought it. A month or a year bought outright does not renew at all. You can cancel at any time, and cancelling stops the next charge rather than the one you have already paid.

We do not take your card ourselves: card payments outside Egypt are handled by Whop, card payments inside Egypt by Paymob, and payments made with PayPal by PayPal, and their terms apply to the transaction alongside these. If we ever change a price, you will be told before it is charged and it will never apply to a period you have already bought.

Fourteen days, no reason needed, on any charge — the refund policy says how.

Fair use of the service

Don’t use Marginalia to break the law, infringe anyone’s rights, or interfere with the service or other readers. We may suspend or remove accounts that do.

The reading assistant

The assistant is generated by AI and can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. Treat its answers as a helpful companion, not an authority. To answer, it sends short excerpts of what you’re reading to our AI provider — see the Privacy Policy.

The service, as-is

Marginalia is provided “as is”, without warranties. We may add, change, or discontinue features. We aren’t liable for lost data or for how you use the service, to the extent the law allows.

Your account

You can delete your account and all of its data at any time from your Account page. We may update these terms; continuing to use Marginalia after a change means you accept it.

Who can use it

You need to be 13 or older to have an account, and 16 or older if you are in the European Union — the age at which you can agree to this yourself under the data protection law there. If you are younger, a parent or guardian can hold the account.

Who owns what

Marginalia — the software, its design, and everything that makes it work — belongs toMahmoud Ayman El Sherif. Using it gives you the right to use it, and nothing else: not to copy it, host it, sell it, or build something from it.

What you bring stays yours. The books you open are yours or their authors’, and their files never reach our servers at all. The highlights, notes and reviews you write are yours; we store them so you can read them on another device, and we claim no ownership of them and will not sell them.
